Before and after: Spacing
Common

Spacing

Gaps between teeth that affect your smile and bite.

What Is It?

Spacing refers to gaps or spaces between teeth. A single gap between the two front upper teeth is very common, but spaces can occur anywhere in the mouth.

Signs to Look For

  • Visible gaps between one or more teeth
  • Food gets trapped in the gaps
  • Self-conscious about the appearance of the smile

What Causes It?

Teeth that are smaller than average, a missing tooth, or natural jaw spacing. Gum issues can also cause spacing to develop over time.

How We Fix It

Braces or Invisalign close the spaces by moving teeth together. Retainers are important after treatment to keep the spaces closed.

Typically 12–18 months
