Life With Braces

Braces are a part of daily life for 12–24 months. Here's how to make that time comfortable, effective, and hassle-free.

What to Expect Early On

The first few days after your braces are placed — and after each adjustment appointment — your teeth will feel tender and sore. This is completely normal. It means the braces are working.

Stick to soft foods for the first 2–3 days. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen help. The discomfort fades quickly, and within a week you'll barely notice your braces.

Brackets and wires may also cause some irritation to the inside of your cheeks at first. Dental wax (included in your welcome kit) creates a smooth barrier between the metal and your soft tissue.

  • Eat soft foods for 2–3 days
  • Take OTC pain relief as needed
  • Use dental wax on any irritating brackets
  • Rinse with warm salt water to soothe gums
  • Avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods
  • Brush gently but thoroughly after every meal

What You Can (and Can't) Eat

Avoid These

  • Hard candy, ice, and nuts
  • Sticky foods — caramel, taffy, gummy bears
  • Chewy foods — bagels, tough bread, licorice
  • Crunchy snacks — popcorn, chips, hard pretzels
  • Corn on the cob or whole apples (cut them up instead)

Great Choices

  • Pasta, rice, soft bread
  • Yogurt, smoothies, soft cheeses
  • Eggs, fish, tender cooked meats
  • Bananas, berries, cooked vegetables
  • Soups, mashed potatoes, oatmeal

Sports, Music & More

Sports: You can play any sport with braces — just protect your smile with a mouthguard during any contact activity. We'll provide guidance on what type to use.

Wind instruments: There's a short adjustment period as your lips get used to the new hardware. Most musicians adapt within 1–2 weeks and play normally.

Singing & public speaking: Some patients notice a slight change at first, but this normalizes quickly. Braces don't limit speech or performance long-term.

You'll visit us every 6–8 weeks for a quick adjustment — we tighten the wire, check progress, and swap your elastic bands. Each visit takes about 20–30 minutes.

After each adjustment, expect 1–2 days of mild soreness. Soft foods and OTC pain relief are your best friends on adjustment days.
